Definitions

VENDOR: Who sells this.

Values: Sun, SGI, Dell, IBM, DEC

TYPE: What type of system is this.

Values:
WORKSTATION (W):
We buy workstations in quantity, and deploy them on a four year renewal cycle. If you buy a "WORKSTATION" type of system you can expect that hardware support will be comparatively inexpensive and time to repair will be quick because we probably have spares on hand.

SERVER (S):We buy servers on a two year renewal cycle. We buy a few of them, and work closely with the vendor for service. If you buy a "SERVER" type of system you should expect to purchase your own hardware support, and you should expect that software support will be excellent for the first 36 months of ownership, but after that, it will be "BEST EFFORT".

DESCRIPTION: For example "ULTRA 10, 440MHz, 256MB DRAM, 9GB/7200-rpm EIDE disk"

STATUS: Current status of support.

Values:
NEW (NEW):
The configuration that is new this year. This is the configuration we most strongly advise you to buy. It is the one we are buying ourselves, and the one we fix bugs in most quickly.

CURRENT (CURR): The configuration is known working, available from the vendor, and you can expect a full 4 years of life from the "WORKSTATION" type or a full 2 years of life from the "SERVER" type of system labeled "CURRENT".

SUPPORTED (SUPD): This configuration is known working, but because the vendor no longer sells it, we don't label it as CURRENT. If you acquire one of these systems, expect hardware and software support until the End of Life date.

BEST EFFORT (BE): This configuration has not been rigorously tested by us, and something may happen where it stops working. Often the "First Deploy" date is "NEVER". But in the interests of alerting you to configurations we think probably work, and which we will try not to break, we have listed the system here.

UNSUPPORTED (UNS): This configuration has not been tested, and we expect it will not work. Perhaps it has reached its end of life. If you wish to make use of this configuration, you are ON YOUR OWN.

DEAD (DEAD): This is a configuration that has reached its End of Life. The Athena release no longer supports this platform.

NOT WORKING (NW): This is a configuration that we have been asked about which we do not plan to support, but for some reason we know enough about it to label it explicitly as known not to work. This is a public service announcement to stay away from this configuration.

FIRST DEPLOY: Date systems first deployed to the field. Exp.: "07/2001"

END OF LIFE: Date systems are slated to have support end. The date at which support for that hardware configuration stops. Athena releases after the End of Life date should be expected to lack support for that configuration.
