Update on Improved Handling of Spam at MIT
In response to the recent increase
in spam email that slipped past MIT's existing SpamAssassin filtering
system,
IS&T has added new technology to the campus email system
to improve
handling
of spam email. All incoming campus email now goes through a cluster
of four
Barracuda Networks Spam Firewall devices. This change was made
on an
experimental basis last Wednesday (August 2nd) to MIT's central
mail system
and expanded to our email infrastructure over the weekend.
Barracuda
Networks maintains a staff dedicated to developing new
rules
and techniques for identifying spam email. They provide hourly
updates in
response to the constantly changing techniques of spammers. Community
members
are already seeing a vast reduction of spam email in their inboxes
as a
result
of these devices. IS&T understands the importance of email
and its
management
and will continue to work to provide reliable and robust email
services.
