What software do I need to use RSS?
To start using RSS, you need "news reader" software that displays RSS content feeds from Web sites you select. There are many different news readers available, including both desktop software and Web-based readers. Blogspace.com provides an RSS Info page containing a list of RSS Reader "Top Picks" and "Runners Up" from which you can choose. Other popular lists of readers include:

Mozilla's Firefox web browser includes an RSS capability called "Live Bookmarks" that lets you add feeds to your Bookmarks menu by clicking an icon () in the status bar. For information on how to subscribe to feeds using Firefox, see Mozilla's Live Bookmarks page. You can also download a Firefox extension called Sage that let's you preview news summaries inside the browser window.

Note

Note: RSS News Reader software is not yet supported by IS&T, and that the potential exists for some Readers to have included malware. As with any new software, please be sure to review the system requirements, caveats, and known issues before you install the RSS Reader software onto your computer.

Why should I use RSS?
RSS provides a useful alternative to browsing the Web for news content and is a fast and efficient way to help you stay up to date with the latest news from multiple sites.

Instead of requiring you to repeatedly type favorite URLs or click through a long list of bookmarks in your browser, trying to remember what you've already seen and what's new, the RSS reader does the work for you and only pulls down fresh items.

Many RSS readers can be configured to run in the background and automatically alert you when something new is posted online.
