Subscribe to a Podcast

To subscribe to a podcast, you'll need podcatching software such as Juice (formerly iPodder) or iTunes. Both of these are cross-platform solutions. In the past, podcasts were RSS feed links that had to be copied and pasted into podcatching software. However, with feeds located in iTunes, Apple provides links that when clicked cause your iTunes to launch and automatically subscribe to the podcast.

Subscribe with an RSS Feed

In iTunes:

  1. Highlight and copy the podcast link location.
  2. Launch iTunes.
  3. Click on the Advanced menu and then click on Subscribe to Podcast....
  4. Paste in the link location and hit OK.
Result: iTunes will download the most recent show and will automatically dowload new shows when they are available.

In Juice:

  1. Highlight and copy the podcast link location.
  2. Launch Juice.
  3. Click on the Subscriptions tab and then click on the green plus (+) sign.
  4. Paste in the link location and hit Save.
  5. From the Tools menu, select Scheduler to specify when you want Juice to download new shows.

Podcasts on Athena: Juice

Note: Juice is in a pre-release state. It may have bugs or not run completely as expected on the Athena workstations. It is currently completely unsupported.

Enter the following commands to run Juice
athena%>add juice
athena%>juice

Once Juice is running, you must set the default music player by going to:
File -> Preferences -> Player
Select "RealPlayer (Linux)" and follow the instructions above for adding a Podcast feed.

Note: Juice only runs on Athena Linux systems. It will not run on the Sun computers.
