IS&T Infinite Mile Award

A Celebration to Acknowledge IS&T Excellence

Every Spring, IS&T gathers to honor the recipients of the Infinite Mile Award. It is a celebration to acknowledge those IS&T individuals making significant contributions to improving the services, systems, and experiences of IS&T and MIT community members. It is a wonderful opportunity to recognize our colleagues and to say: "Thank you for a job well done."

The 2008 Infinite Mile Award Selection Committee is ready to accept your nominations. From now until Friday, April 18th, you may submit your nominations to the Infinite Mile Award Selection Committee at ist-rr@mit.edu. The winners may be individuals or teams with prizes ranging from $1,000 per individual or $2,000 per team.

Writing a Nomination

Would you like to nominate an IS&T employee or team for the Infinite Mile Award, but are not sure how to go about it? How will you describe the individual or team and write about their outstanding achievements?

Here are the seven IS&T strategic themes to consider, some guidelines to help you get started, and a sample nomination written about a previous recipient.

Please use the online form provided at the bottom of this page.

Tips and Guidelines

Here are some tips and guidelines to help you get started.

  1. Get together with your colleagues to reflect on who might be deserving of a nomination this year.  Who has done an outstanding job in your area, or in another area of IS&T?

  2. Describe the team or individual and what they did to deserve this recognition.
    • Describe the project or work, citing specific examples of how the team or individual tackled the issues. What was noteworthy about it or how did the solution make a difference? How did the team work together to achieve the outcome?

  3. Tell the "story" of how the team or individual accomplished what they did.  What problem did they solve, and why was it important?  What challenges did they face?  How did they overcome obstacles?  What positive results did they produce for your group/IS&T?  Remember, you may be familiar with your nominee’s work, but Selection Committee members and other staff may not be.

  4. Explain how their contributions relate to our IS&T Strategic Themes.  For example:
    • Customer Service: Does the team or individual always think about the community they are serving: fellow IS&T members, other IS&T teams, other departments across MIT, students, faculty and other members of the MIT Community.
    • Collaboration:  Does the team or individual build bridges across IS&T groups, or across the Institute?

  5. What were the results of these achievements?
    • What were the benefits? Did the customer or department save time, money or improve services?
    • How did the team or individual make a significant contribution to improving the services, systems, and experiences of IS&T and MIT community members?

  6. Reach out and ask co-workers, clients and others to include a detailed support letter or testimonial for your nomination.

  7. Ask someone to read the nomination and give you feedback before you submit it to the Selection Committee for consideration. Have fun, and feel good about recognizing your fellow colleague(s)!
