Creating the Spamscreen Folder in Apple Mail (Mail.app)

Junk Mail

MIT Spam Screening does not work in conjunction with the Junk Mail option in Apple Mail. These are two different methods for addressing the problem of spam.

Create the Folder

If you've set up Spamscreen filtering for another IMAP-based email program you use for your MIT email, e.g., Outlook or Eudora (used with IMAP), your Spamscreen folder is already set up.

Note

Note: Everyone with an account created on or after October 4, 2004 will have a Spamscreen folder already created on the main server and will not need to complete the following steps.

  1. Launch Apple Mail.

  2. Click on the Mailboxes icon in Apple Mail's top menu bar (or select View > Show Drawer from the menu).
Result: The "drawer" that contains your existing mailboxes will expand either to the right or left of the window.

  3. Click the arrow to the right of your In mailbox to display the mailboxes and subfolders within.

  4. Using the Mailbox menu in the Apple Mail menu at the top of the application's window, select New Mailbox....
Result: A New Mailbox dialog box appears prompting you to name the new mailbox.

  5. Enter Spamscreen in the Name: field.
Note: The first - and only the first - letter of Spamscreen should be capitalized.

  6. Refresh the view by clicking the arrow next to the In mailbox to expand/collapse it. The Spamscreen mailbox should now appear as a subdirectory.

Result: You should have a folder inside your INBOX called Spamscreen. All messages flagged as Spam will automatically go into this folder.
