Eudora for Windows Spam Screening (POP)
Eudora Information
The instructions below pertain to Eudora for Windows with POP.
Everyone with an account created on or after
October 4, 2004 will have a Spamscreen folder
already created on the mail server. Regardless
of your configuration choice (IMAP or POP) your
spam will be filtered on the mail server.
If you are using the POP protocol, there are some important
things to keep in mind:
- If a folder named Spamscreen is on the mail server, it will not be visible from your local Eudora client. You can view your Spamscreen folder
via WebMail.
- Spam mailed to your MIT email address will be marked and filtered into the Spamscreen folder prior to being downloaded by your Eudora mail
client. Users should check this folder periodically to confirm the spam is being handled appropriately. You can modify
your personalized
settings.
- Should you wish to remove the Spamscreen folder from the mail server follow the instructions in WebMail: Delete the Spamscreen Folder.

|
Note: IS&T now recommends IMAP for
accessing email. IMAP provides flexibility and functionality, especially with regards to accessing email from
multiple machines/clients, that POP does not. The following instructions are provided for legacy POP users not yet
ready to switch to IMAP. For more information about IMAP visit the Guide
to IMAP at MIT. |

Create a Filter
- Launch Eudora.
- Under the Tools menu select Filters.
- In the Filters dialog box, click on the New button
at the bottom of the left column.

- In the Match section:
- The Incoming box should be checked by default; if not,
check it.
- Type in the top Header Field: X-Spam-Flag.
- Type YES in the field next to "contains". (Be
sure to use all capitals.)
- In the Action section
- Select Transfer To from the drop down menu.
- Click on In in the field next to the Transfer To pop up menu to view the transfer options.
Result: The list of transfer options appears.

- Select New...
Result: A New
Mailbox window will appear. Note: The Mailbox Window may
list a different folder where your new mailbox is being created than
the one shown in the example below. Your filter will still work.

- Name the new mailbox by typing in a name such as "Spam"
and click OK.
Important: Do NOT check the Make it a folder box.

- The new mailbox name should now appear next to the Transfer to
field.
- Click on the second menu under Action (it should currently
say None).
- Select Skip Rest (at the bottom of the menu). This will prevent
messages that are filtered as spam from having other filters if you
have them applied.

Result: The Filters dialog box should look like this:

- Click on the X in the upper right corner and click Yes
when asked to Save changes to Filters.

The next time you check email, any message that is marked
as spam by the scoring will be filtered into the mailbox you created.

Check Your Mailbox
You should periodically check your new mailbox, especially during the
first 6-8 weeks you are filtering spam, to make sure nothing that you
consider legitimate email is being filtered. Things such as monthly newsletters
are very difficult for a computer to distinguish from spam, so be on the
look out.
After verifying the email is spam, you should delete the messages to
save hard disk space.
