POP Spam Screening: Generic Configuration

About POP

Incoming email will be scanned at the server lever for spam characteristics and given a YES | NO value.

To learn more about POP (Post Office Protocol), see the Email Glossary.

Configuring POP Clients

  1. Launch the POP email client that you would like to configure.

  2. Create a new mailbox or folder where you wish to have email that is flagged as spam stored temporarily.

  3. Create a filter or rule that will filter on a criteria in the mail header that matches: X-Spam-Flag: YES.

  4. Transfer email marked with a YES value into the spam folder you created.

Check Your Mailbox

You should periodically check your new mailbox, especially during the first 6-8 weeks you are filtering spam, to make sure nothing that you consider spam is being filtered. Things such as monthly newsletters are very difficult for a computer to distinguish from spam, so be on the lookout.

Configure Your Personalized Settings

Once you have set up spam screening, there are some additional (optional) settings that you might want to configure. See Spam Screening Personalized Settings to configure the settings below:

  • Set Your Spam Scoring Level
Customize the level that determines whether a message is considered spam or not.

  • Manage Your Allow List
Enables you to identify message senders from whom you always wish to receive a message.

  • Manage Your Deny List
Enables you to identify message senders from whom you never wish to receive a message.
