Mac OS X
Connect Via Ethernet
- Open System Preferences,
either from the Dock or the blue Apple menu.
- When the System Preferences window appears,
click on the Network icon.
Result: The Network configuration
window appears. From this window, you configure
TCP/IP, AppleTalk, PPP (dialup Tether) and
even PPPoE (DSL with an outside provider).
- From the Location drop down menu (at the
top of the window), choose Automatic.
OS X will decide how you are trying to connect.
- From the Show menu (beneath the Location
menu), choose Built-In Ethernet.

and enter the following settings as shown

- Click on the button in the lower right corner.
It will either say Apply Now
or Save.
- To close the window, click on the red button.
To configure AppleTalk and DHCP/Wireless,
keep the Network window open and continue
to the next set of instructions below.
Configure
Appletalk
- Click on the AppleTalk
tab.
Result: The AppleTalk configuration
panel appears.
- Click in the check box Make AppleTalk
Active.
- Click the Apply Now/Save
button.
- Click on the Configure
pop-up menu and choose Automatically.
Tip You may need to toggle
between Automatically and Manually.
Result: The AppleTalk Zone field
is activated and your AppleTalk Zone appears
selected in the drop-down menu.
- Click the Apply Now/Save
button.
Result: If this is your desktop computer
and you do not plan on moving it to any other
location, you are done.

- Open your Web browser and go to http://web.mit.edu/.
Test your AppleTalk setup
- From the Macintosh Go menu, select Connect
to Servers...

You can register for one of the mobile computer services that let you
connect your laptop computer from many sites on campus either via a DHCP
(Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) -- wired or wireless.
To use the wireless service you must have
Students and others with no existing static MITnet IP address
You are done and do not need to complete the steps below.
Faculty, staff, and others with an existing MITnet IP address
If you also need a wireless connection, complete the steps below.
- Under System Preferences select Network.
- In the Show pull-down menu, select AirPort.
- Click on the TCP/IP tab
and complete the fields as shown in the table
below.

- At the bottom of the screen, note the Airport
ID. This is the hardware address of the Airport
card. Write it down -- you'll need this to
register the AirPort card.
- Click on the Apply Now
button.
To use this service you must have a valid static
MITnet IP address, which you do if you have
just completed the Ethernet connectivity setup.

via Dialup
Tether is MIT's remote-access dialup service
providing PPP
- Open System Preferences, either from the
Dock or the blue Apple menu.
- In the System Preferences window, click
on the Network icon.
Result: The Network configuration
window appears. From this window, you configure
TCP/IP, AppleTalk, PPP (dialup Tether) and
even PPPoE (DSL with an outside provider).
- From the Location drop

either Internal Modem or
External Modem.

- Click on the Apply Now/Save button.
Configure
Modem
- If you do not have an internal modem, click
on the Modem tab and choose
your modem from the Modem
pull-down menu. Unless you are an advanced
user and are comfortable with changing settings,
accept the other defaults.
- Click on the Apply Now/Save
button.
Test Your
Tether Settings
- To connect to Tether, from the Go menu choose
Applications. When the Applications
window appears, click on Internet
Connect.
- In the window that appears, from the Configuration
drop-down menu, select Internal Modem.
Result: The Internal Modem window
appears containing the appropriate Tether
dialup information.
- In the Password field,
enter your Kerberos password and click on
Connect.
Result: You are connected to MITnet
via Tether.
- Test the connection. Launch Internet Explorer
and go to http://web.mit.edu/.
Connect Via iPass
What is iPass?
iPass is a fee-based remote connection service
for members of the MIT community who are traveling
outside the Cambridge/Boston area and need to
connect to the Internet and to MITnet.
With the iPassConnect client installed on your
computer, a modem, and an MIT iPass account
you can be just about anywhere in the world
and connect to the Internet by dialing a local
(or nearby) telephone number, saving long-distance
toll charges (for example, compared to Tether
or with an MIT calling card). In addition to
standard modem dialup, high-speed wireless and
wired broadband iPass connections are available
at some airports, hotels, and conference centers
worldwide. iPass operates by consolidating Internet
service providers into a single global virtual
network.
Connecting
Registration and use of iPass requires that
you have a Kerberos username and password. Currently,
iPass is available only to members of the MIT
community whose usage fees can be charged to
an Institute cost center. In the future, iPass
will be available for personal use to MIT faculty,
staff, and students, with billing through payroll
deduction or student accounts.
Note: iPass is not intended
to replace a dialup connection from your home
that you use for more than four hours a month.
