Telephone Operators: Services Offered
Audio Bridges
MIT Employees can reserve a designated

If time is available the employee is given
a telephone number to share with all parties
of the conference call. Each member dials
this MIT telephone number and all callers
are connected.

a conference call on an audio bridge
you may email any one of the operators
at: tele-info@mit.edu.

number that you will be charging the conference call to on hand,
as well as the names and telephone numbers of all parties to be
called.
- Place a call the MIT switchboard; (0) from an MIT telephone,
617.253.1000 from an outside line.
- Give the operator the 7 digit MIT account number and the names
and telephone numbers of the parties you wish called.
- The telephone operator will put you on hold, place the other
calls, and connect you once all parties have been contacted.
Assistance with Annoyance
Calls
For help with annoying or obscene telephone calls you may call
the MIT switchboard at 617.253.3654. An operator will assist you
in taking down the information and informing you of your options.
Please be aware that Massachusetts law prohibits the making of
annoying phone calls. Federal law prohibits the making of obscene
or harassing calls in interstate or foreign communications. To help
discourage such calls, follow these simple suggestions:
- Ask who is calling, and the number the person is trying to reach.
Do not give out your number or name to the caller or any personal
information.
- Hang up immediately if the caller does not respond when you
answer, if the caller begins to use obscene language, or if the
caller is not identified to your satisfaction. Do not slam the
receiver down, yell at the caller, or otherwise indicate that
you are annoyed. Just hang up.
- Don't talk if the same caller phones again. Remember, all the
caller wants is the audience. Don't give the satisfaction of responding.
- Call Campus Police directly at x3-1212 and report the annoying
calls, particularly if you are threatened over the phone.
The above suggestions were reprinted from the Campus Police Safety,
Security
and Crime Prevention Handbook. [Adobe
