Athena at MIT: Purchasing an Athena Workstation or Server

Introduction

This page includes information about purchasing a Sun or IBM system for use as Athena workstation or server.

The Athena operating system is supported on a limited number of system models and configurations, to ensure compatibility it is important that systems are ordered exactly as listed on the Recommended Athena Workstations and Servers pages.

Once you have received your equipment, contact Athena Hardware Services for installation at hardserv@mit.edu or 253-0815.

Sun

Sun workstations are ordered directly from the manufacturer.

  1. Review the recommended Athena workstation and server configurations.
This page includes the Sun part numbers for the supported configurations.

  2. Contact Sun for a quote.
Send email to edu-online@sun.com and include the Sun part numbers from the recommended products page.

  3. Create a purchase requisition to Sun
using SAP vendor number 122282.  Forward a copy of the quote to Procurement and indicate that the order is for an Athena workstation.  Procurement will place the order with Sun.

IBM

The IBM recommended configuration can be ordered from GovConnection using the catalog numbers on the Recommended Athena Workstation page.

These products are also available to order from the manufacturer directly. To place an order with IBM contact James Kang <jkang@ibm4pcs.com>, the sales rep for MIT, for a quote. Create an SAP requisition for IBM (vendor number 122796) and forward a copy of the quote to Procurement. If you order from IBM directly you may need to provide Procurement with vendor justification. For additional information see Vendor Justification Rules.
