Eudora 5.2 for Windows: Importing Certificates

Note: Eudora 5.2 is no longer supported. All versions of Eudora will be retired as of December, 2006. IS&T strongly encourages all current Eudora users to migrate to supported email clients.

Certificate Renewal July 14, 2006
Certificates are your key to secure web services at MIT, such as Benefits, Request Tracker, ECAT, Roles, SAPweb, and WebSIS. MIT personal web certificates are set to expire periodically. This year, in addition to renewing your personal certificate, you will also need to renew the MIT CA. New personal certificates are good until July 31, 2007; the new MIT CA is good until August, 2026.

Fix for Obtaining Certificates for Eudora 5.2 for Windows

  1. Go to Certificates at MIT and save a copy of the mitca on your computer. In Internet Explorer click on “Get MIT CA.” A dialog box with the option to save appears. In Firefox right-click on “Get MIT CA” and select “Save Link As…”.

Note: In other browsers the option to save may be different.

Import MIT CA

  1. Open Eudora.

Note: For the import to work properly, the SSL error message must display. If you don’t see the SSL error, send a message so that you get the error.

  2. Now that you have Eudora Open, click on Tools > Options… > Sending Mail.

  3. Click on “Last SSL Info”.

Result: The Eudora SSL Connection Information Manager window displays.

  4. Click on “Certificate Information Manager”.

    |Result: The Certificate Information Manager window displays.

  5. Click on “Import Certificate”.

Result: A window displays where you can browse the desktop for the mitca file previously downloaded.

  6. Select the mitca.crt file (or mitca.cer) and click Open.

Note: The file might have a .cer or .crt extension, depending on which web browser you used to download the file. Internet Explorer will save the file as mitca.cer; Mozilla Firefox will save the file as mitca.crt.

  7. Click Done. Then click OK.

You have now successfully imported the MIT CA and may send email successfully.
