Recommended Network Cards

General Information

Systems recommended by IS&T come with MITnet-compatible Ethernet and/or wireless cards. Most PCs and Macintosh computers now ship with built-in Ethernet that work on the MIT campus network. Most laptop and PDA vendors provide good options for internal wireless cards.

Ethernet Cards

If you have an older computer you may have to buy an Ethernet adapter card. We suggest either a 3Com or Intel Corp card -- both companies manufacturer cards that typically work on the MIT campus network.

Wireless Cards

If purchasing a wireless card, any that are Wi-Fi compliant that supports 802.11 a/b/g standard will work with the MIT wireless network infrastructure. Wireless network cards that are not IEEE 802.11a/b/g compliant (such as "Bluetooth" cards) will not work.

If you have questions about Ethernet or wireless cards, or are having a problem with a card, contact the Computing Help Desk, Monday through Friday, 8am-6pm. Call 617.253.1101 or send email to computing-help@mit.edu.
