Do non-recommended machines work at MIT, e.g., connect to the campus network?

In most cases they do. Problems that some MIT affiliates encounter with non-recommended computers is:

  • difficulty getting them upgraded or repaired
  • inability to run some MIT-specific applications
  • problems with connecting to the MIT campus network

If you decide to buy a non-recommended computer, make sure you know what applications you need to use, how you'll be connecting to the campus network and how you can get driver upgrades and repairs done before purchasing and investigate the machine's ability to accomodate your needs.

What peripherals are available for my computer?

Peripherals are available from many different vendors at MIT. These include Apple, Dell, and GovConnection.

MIT does not make any specific recommendations for personal peripheral purchases. MIT students and staff are welcome to use any of the above vendors, as well as any other vendor, to purchase peripherals as they see fit.

Often, we receive requests for printer recommendations. MIT only makes recommendations for administrative printers.
