Help Desk Service Center:
Hardware and Software Service
Overview
The Service Center offers a full range of hardware and software services
to the MIT Community in a timely and cost-effective manner:
- Diagnosis and repair for Institute and personally owned computers
- Hardware service contracts (called MITcare) for selected Apple, Dell
and IBM computers and HP Laser printers
- Hardware and software service upgrades
- Order Apple, Dell, or Lenovo parts for MIT departments on an MIT account number
- Disaster recovery and assessment
- Troubleshoot network configuration problems including DHCP, Tether,
and iPass
- Resolve wireless connectivity problems
- Virus, spyware and adware scanning and removal
Call the Computing Help Desk at 617.253.1101 to talk to a consultant
before bringing your computer to N42. Depending on the nature of the
problem, a phone call may be able to save you the trip. If not, you
can make an appointment for an in-person consultation. There is no
charge for the first 15 minutes you spend with a consultant. If the
problem has not been resolved in that time, you can choose to leave
your machine for further assessment of the problem and an estimate
of the work to be done. You will be contacted with the estimate for
the cost for repair (our rate is $60/hour plus the cost of any parts).
At that point, you can choose to have the work done, or return and
pick up your machine. There is no charge for work on hardware under
warranty. Software work, such as an operating system installation,
is not included under warranty. Pickup and delivery is also available
(on-campus offices only) at $35/round-trip.
Pickup and Delivery
Equipment can be picked up from
on-campus Institute offices; pickups are typically scheduled for the
next business day. Equipment must be carried in from home or MIT dormitories.

charges for certain items which Dell considers to be "customer
replaceable" will be billed at the regular rate. Any laptops
which have Rapid Response or Depot warranties (this includes most
Inspiron models) will also be subject to the regular rate of $60/hr. |

Payment Methods:
MIT requisitions, MIT object code (account number), personal checks,
MasterCard and Visa.
