Policy for Private Wireless Access Points on MITnetMIT's wireless networking infrastructure has been installed to support the academic mission of the Institute. The technology used, based on the IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN standard, works in the 2.4GHz radio band, a shared part of the radio spectrum. In order to limit interference with MIT's network infrastructure, the Institute asks that members of the MIT community avoid the use of devices that work in the 2.4GHz region, such as some cordless phones. Users wishing to deploy wireless LAN technology in a small office or lab environment may do so under certain restrictions. Note that a private deployment must comply with Institute guidelines, available at Guidelines for Private Wireless Access Points on MITnet. If you prefer to deploy your own wireless coverage, you will find the Primer for Private Wireless Access Points on MITnet very helpful. Note that Information Services and Technology is available to deploy wireless coverage in your on-campus office, meeting room, laboratory, or departmental space. When installed by Information Services and Technology, these access points are considered an extension of the MIT infrastructure, and are owned, maintained, and supported by Information Services and Technology. For more information and to request wireless coverage in your area, please fill out the Wireless Request Form. |
