Microsoft Windows is designed for
desktop and laptops of the Intel
architecture. IS&T recommends
and fully supports Microsoft
Windows XP Professional SP2. Services are also provided
to support Windows servers and domains.

Linux/Unix:
Athena
at MIT
MIT's Unix-based campus-wide
academic computing facility. The
Athena system provides computing
resources to thousands of users
across the MIT campus. The current
Athena release (9.4) is fully supported
for Sun Solaris 9 and Red Hat Enterprise
Linux 4.
Linux
at MIT
A free Unix-type operating system, with source code developed under the GNU General Public License and made
freely available. IS&T
recommends and supports two distributions
of Linux:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 with Red Hat
Network and Athena
Linux 9.4 (based
on Red Hat Enterprise 4).
Unix
at MIT
IS&T has negotiated site licenses for HP
(Tru64 UNIX) and Sun (Solaris) proprietary operating systems and

Mobile Devices/PDAs:
PDAs/Wireless Devices at MIT
IS&T is developing support for mobile devices combining a cell phone and Internet access, to access MIT's
email, web pages, and MIT TechTime™ calendar. IS&T supports devices running Windows
Mobile, the BlackBerry
8830 World Edition, the Apple
iPhone, and the Apple iPod Touch. Check Mobile
Devices/PDAs at MIT for the latest
information on support within the MIT environment.
Mainframe:
IBM-VM
IBM's VM operating system is a mainframe
time-sharing system that is based on the concept
of virtual machines - each VM user works
virtually in a workstation environment
that provides them with access to the larger
mainframe. VM is used at MIT to run some of
the Institute's mission-critical applications.
