Printing at MIT

Central Print Service

Overview

The Central Print Service is provided to the MIT community as a convenient and cost-effective way to handle large print jobs (larger than you would want to print on a local printer). Submissions can be made by printing directly from a desktop application such as Microsoft Word, etc., or via LPR / KLPR. Print output is delivered via campus mail.

The Central Printing Team can also individually help departments that need to print large, regularly scheduled jobs, with the ability to apply special handling and custom stock.
Note: At this time Central Print only has high-volume, black and white printers.

Technical Details

The service is network based. Print queues are managed by InfoPrint Manager (IPM), an IBM product, which runs under AIX on an P5 server located in building W91. The printers are two IBM Infoprint 2090ES devices. The Central Print Service does not currently provide decryption of encrypted print files.

Getting Started

  • First, contact the Central Print Team to review your requirements.
  • Next, think about how you choose to submit print jobs. If you are going to submit jobs from a desktop application, you will need to install a new printer on your desktop.
  • You may submit files in PDF or PS (postscript) format. If you would like to print another format, such as a Word .doc file, first Save to File (which creates a postscript file), then submit that file.
  • For help with the above steps see Central Printing IPM Processes.
  • You're ready to print.
