Central Printing: Central Print Service
IPM processes files from two sources: LPR, or directly from your desktop applications.
Prepare Files for Submission
Printing via LPR/KLPR
IPM can process postscript, image, and PDF files via LPR and KLPR. All other files must be printed to file in postscript
format before they are submitted via LPR or KLPR. So, with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and FileMaker files you may
either print to file in PostScript format before sending them to be printed via LPR/KLPR, or, you can print them
from within you desktop application using the Print function and selecting the appropriate pre-defined IPM printer.
Note: The result of sending a file that is not in PostScript format is nonsense output.
For help with this step, see Central
Printing: Print to File
Printing via your desktop applications
IPM can processes files directly from your desktop applications such as Word, Excel, or Acrobat. You will need
to add a desktop printer pointing to the appropriate IPM print queue in order to use this method. Files printed
using this method do not need to be pre-printed to a file.
Adding a Desktop Printer
Adding a Central Printing desktop printer:
If you would like to print directly from within your
desktop application, e.g., Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, you will need to add a desktop printer pointing to the correct
queue. Please review the IS&T
newsletter article for
more information. Note: The public central print queue names are letter for plain,
letter-sized paper, and central-3hole for letter-sized paper that has three holes punched on the
left margin. Alternatively, you may print a “printer-ready” document by using the LPR command. See above.

Submit
a Print Job
Once you have defined a desktop printer pointing to a valid Central Printing queue, you may print your document
one of two ways:
- From within you desktop application (Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, etc.) you can use the
built-in print function and select the print queue added above.
- From the MS-DOS command line, you may issue
the LPR command, as follows:
LPR –Pcentral-letter filename.ext
where "central-letter" is the name of our queue for plain letter paper and "filename.ext" is
the name of the file you wish to print.
