Printing Glossary

LPR/LPR Spooler
Line Printer Remote. Also called the LPR client and WLPR for Windows. Platform independent printing software that sends jobs to a printer or print queue. Allows remote queue management, described below.

LPD
Line Printer Daemon. Printer or print server software. Included in NT Server. Accepts print jobs from LPR client.

Port
In the Windows Add Printer Wizard, "port" refers to the pathname on your computer for the virtual printer connection. Printing may take place using the printer port or the network port.

Print Queue/Printer Queue

  1. Manages documents submitted to the printer or print server and waiting to be printed.
    OR
  2. Windows NT Add Printer Wizard: "Remote printer/queue" refers to the printer name.

Print Server
Computer that performs security checks, sends jobs to printer. Many MITnet printers are managed by Athena print servers.  

Remote Queue Management
Check the status of your print job waiting in the print queue, remove print job from queue.

Spooler
Software that sends jobs to a print queue.

WLPR/WLPR Spooler
LPR software for Windows computers.
