Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)

MITvoip Service Overview

The MITvoip production service is MIT's main IP-based voice service intended to replace traditional ISDN phone service as currently used by MIT departments, labs, and centers. IS&T is responsible for supporting all aspects of the service from the infrastructure to the telephone devices used by staff and faculty.

The MITvoip infrastructure is augmented by an interoperable, open infrastructure that will provide a flexible platform for innovation, application development, and experiments in integrated communications. If the MITvoip production service does not meet your needs, but you are interested in voice over IP, please contact the Voip Transition team at voip-transition-team@mit.edu. There may be additional options available to experimenters and early adopters.

For a full MITvoip service description, please refer to the MITvoip Service Summary.

IP Communication Options

Personal SIP Accounts: Personal SIP Accounts leverage the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) to allow MIT users to experiment with advanced voice and video applications and services. SIP is an open standard that supports communications with a variety of devices using your "username@mit.edu" identity. Personal SIP Accounts are not intended as a replacement for telephone services. This experimental service is aimed at advanced users and has limited support.

Open Source Telephony: An IP legacy option that evolved out of the VoIP Pilot Program.
