Overview
VoIP
telephones are a new service from IS&T that uses internet
technology for
phone calls. Currently in a pilot program, IS&T sees VoIP as
a part of MIT's
long term telecommunication strategy.
This guide describes how to use the voice features of the MIT
VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) Telephone System. Use the links
to the left to find the information you need for using the system.
MIT's VoIP phone system is full featured and efficient to use,
but is probably different from other phone systems you have used.
This guide is your key to understanding the system and making full
use of it's many features.
Unlike conventional circuit-switched telephone systems, including
ISDN, VoIP takes advantage of Internet packet-switched technology.
Call quality is usually excellent, but it is possible for call
packets to be dropped on occasion with this technology, leading
to momentary breakups in the call.

Program Notes

local IT contacts to activate, deploy, and support VoIP service
and devices.
- IS&T is using the pilot to collect customer feedback on the
service and the transition of phone service.
- IS&T is working with pilot users to test an initial set of
recommended and centrally configurable IP telephones.
- IS&T, in partnership with IT staff and interested members of
the MIT community, is developing an extended enterprise strategy
