Frequently Asked Questions

Question:

When I try to upload my new web pages I get an error that says I don't have permission to do so. How do I change access privileges for my department's web (org) locker?

Answer:

This can be done one of two ways.

1) The first is to update the administrative mailing list for the locker (cwis-www in the example below). This list is set up when the locker is created. See the example in number 2 to find out the name of the administrative mailing list for a locker. The management of mailing lists is facilitated through the Athena List Management Web Interface (certificates required). Please go to the Creating and Maintaining Mailing Lists on MITnet page for more information .

2) The second is to update the access control list (ACL) for the locker. You must have administrative privileges for a given Athena locker in order to add members, delete members, or modify its access list.

To find out the name of your locker's access list:

  • Remotely connect to Athena or log in at an Athena workstation
  • Type fs la ~[lockername] at the prompt. For example, if you want to view the access list for the CWIS locker, you would type:

           fs la ~cwis
  • You might see a print out that looks like this:

    Access list for /afs/athena.mit.edu/org/c/cwis/
    Normal rights:
       system:expunge ld
       system:cwis-www rlidwka
       system:anyuser rl
       tgriffin rlidwka

  • The lines following "Normal rights" tell you who has access to your locker. rlidwka means that the list cwis-www * and the user tgriffin have full access to the locker. anyuser rl means that any arbitrary person without administrative privileges can only read or list the contents of the locker. Note that more than one list may have access to the locker.

If you need further assistance with setting access permissions please contact Athena User Accounts at 253-1325 or accounts@mit.edu.
