Using MIT Web Space

All MIT account holders are given file space on Athena, MIT's UNIX-based campus-wide academic computing facility. This space is called a locker. The Athena system provides computing resources to over 14,000 users across the MIT campus. Athena users have access to software to help them write papers, create graphs, analyze data, communicate with their colleagues, play games, and perform countless other tasks, as well as software designed specifically for class work.

Web sites can be housed in your Athena account by putting your HTML documents in a world readable directory. The convention for personal websites at MIT is to use a directory named "www" in your home directory. This directory is automatically created for new accounts. For department, program, organization, and course websites we recommend putting an index.html document in your home directory. The rest of your website files should go in appropriate folders within your home directory. When using MIT web space you must follow MIT's legal and policy guidelines.

In this section you will find information on transferring files to an Athena locker and setting permissions.
