About Fugaku Taiko
This winter, Triangle-area residents are invited to enjoy a unique
cultural experience! Fugaku
Taiko, a traditional Japanese drumming ensemble from the foothills
of Mt. Fuji will perform here in North Carolina! Fugaku Taiko's spectacular performance style,
featuring a combination of artistic skill, dexterity, and physical
endurance, is certain to heat things up in the Triangle this winter!
Performances are currently scheduled for Saturday, January 19, 2008
(John Friederick ETC Hall, North Carolina School of Science and
Mathematics in Durham) and Tuesday, January 22 (Stewart Theatre, North
Carolina State University in Raleigh).
While drumming in Japan can be traced back to ancient times, the ensemble style of taiko performance has primarily grown to popularity since the mid-twentieth century. Fugaku Taiko, founded in 1977, presents more than 100 performances a year in Japan and around the world. They were also the first taiko group to discover the benefits of taiko therapy for mentally handicapped individuals, and their touring ensemble now features several handicapped players.
Fugaku Taiko's performance is sponsored by Triangle Taiko and made possible in part by the generous
support of the Nippon
Taiko Foundation, which is comprised of more than 23,000 members
in over 800 taiko groups throughout Japan. Though they have sponsored
performances in over 40 countries, Fugaku Taiko is the first group
from the Foundation to visit the Southeastern United States. Don't
