Network and Computing Infrastructure

MITnet, the primary campus network

  • Implemented in 1984 to meet the network needs of Project Athena, the foundation for our current Academic Computing Environment (Athena)
  • FDDI (100Mb/sec) spine, connecting approximately 125 (mostly) Ethernet subnets and over 13,000 machines to MITnet and, by extension, the Internet
  • Connections to every academic, administrative and residential building
  • Network Services based on Client-Server architecture

    MITnet Daily Activity

  • over 100,000 email messages per day, over 7,000 discrete users using MIT authenticated services

    Athena Computing Environment

  • Foundation for Academic Computing Environment
  • Centrally managed, distributed computing environment
  • Location independent, available 24/7/365
  • Predominantly UNIX
  • More later...
