Working with Faculty

How to Create a Supportive Environment for Faculty

Be approachable

  • One-on-one is always best
  • No students (sorry)
  • Grease the wheels of the organization
  • Make yourself easy to find

  • Know your audience

  • Be familiar with the discipline
  • Be familiar with curriculum issues
  • Understand departmental politics
  • Do things to show you care: send journal articles, software demos, conferences, etc.

  • Be a support person, not a salesperson

  • Ask faculty about curriculum problems
  • Start small (one professor, one department)
  • Be patient

  • Leverage fear, envy and competitiveness

  • Realize that computers can be intimidating
  • Other faculty and other schools are great motivators
