| Appropriate technologies are a means for achieving sustainable development by enabling people to improve their quality of life without destroying the environment, in a controlled way that analyzes long-term consequences, and with knowledge and skills that empower the community to improve their own lives. Appropriate technologies can be the solution to issues in agriculture, manufacturing, or even healthcare. For example, in remote areas, people are dying from curable diseases because they cannot reach medical care when they need it most. Often, the only way for ill patients or pregnant women reach a clinic is to be carried in a wheelbarrow. If the distance from home to healthcare takes too long, patients do not even attempt the journey, allow conditions to worsen, or die before they reach aid. The bicycle ambulance is a sustainable solution to this tragic problem in several developing areas. Jessica Vechakul has designed a bicycle ambulance for Zambia that is essentially a two-wheeled trailer that carries a stretcher and can be towed by any bicycle. The bicycle ambulance is made only from local materials and does not rely on any fossil fuels or electricity for operation. |
