| Biodiesel@MIT is a student-led group that aims to produce biodiesel fuel at MIT from used vegetable oil (UVO) produced in campus food services operations. Target use of the fuel is in MIT Parking and Transportation's (P&T's) fleet of diesel-powered shuttles as a blend with petroleum-based diesel (petro-diesel) fuel. Use of MIT-produced biodiesel instead of petro-diesel fuel would offer MIT P&T a monetary savings through a lower fuel price in addition to the ecological benefits of using a renewable fuel instead of petro-diesel. Biodiesel@MIT proposes to supply 30,000 gallons of B20 (a blend of 20% biodiesel and 80% petro-diesel) to cover MIT's annual diesel usage, and recently secured a $25,000 grant through the mtvU/GE Ecoimagination Challenge to kick start the project. |
