The presentation's focus will be on: Use of Ecological Footprint as a sustainability indicator; Description of the Footprinting for the Future program; Transfer of the program model could be transferred to US schools. The Footprinting for the Future project was founded by Christopher Cleaver when he travelled to the island of Mauritius during IAP 2007, as an MIT Public Service Center Independent Fellow. The organization, led by University of Technology Mauritius, aims to use the tool of Ecological Footprinting (EF) to promote sustainability amongst communities in Mauritius. In April 2007, the School Footprinting Initiative (SFI) is being launched in 12 schools across the island, during which participating students, aged 14-16, will conduct an EF Investigation of their school and compete for grants to implement projects which aim to reduce the school's EF. The possibility of transferring the SFI program model to schools in the USA will be put forward. The presentation will include a large explanatory poster, a set of SFI program documents and an online interactive EF quiz.
