Our presentation will answer two questions: (1) What are green hospitals? The Green Guide for Health Care was recently published and it serves as the LEED certification for hospitals. There are two hospitals in the US that are truly green. However, hospitals have been doing environmentally friendly and socially sustainable projects in the past. The non-profit organization “Health Care Without Harm” (HCWH) has been a strong champion for environmentally friendly practices in hospitals. We plan to educate the audience about the work of HCWH and highlight several significant green projects by hospitals. (2) How does going green affect the profitability of a hospital? Our work this semester has focused on understanding the implications of green investments for hospital revenues and operating costs. We will present previous research in this area. We also plan to present a business framework that can help hospital CFO’s understand fully the aspects of green investments.
