| The Zero Waste Party kicked off Earth Week 2006, on April 21st, 2006. The event was a great success for the MIT Student Community, Students for Global Sustainability. The theme of the party was to make a mark in the world; don't leave your mark on it!! To put this theme into practice, SfGS offered free, locally-grown, organic foods and the challenge of finishing the evening without making a burden on landfill (by composting or recycling all waste) or emissions (by purchasing wind power for the event). For follow-up, event leaders wrote and published a guide for other groups or individuals to host a Zero Waste Party based on the experience at MIT. In fact, SfGS will be using it again this spring. The 2006 event kicked off MIT's Earth Week celebrations, and the plan is to have another party this year the night before Earth Day. It will be held after our first EcoExpo, a poster session to celebrate student projects in sustainability. The Zero Waste Party was our favorite for 2006 because of the practical application of sustainable principles in daily life, the broad reach the event had around our campus, and the opportunity to share our event with other student communities. The most successful party we have heard of so far brought in more than 5,400 people and generated only 35 pounds of trash. Can your student community beat that challenge? |
