Set Limits
What to avoid when you are volunteering
Do not accept to much responsibility
Know your limits in terms of your personal comfort levels and what you consider good judgment.
Do not give the children money.
Don’t Give Up
Do not get discouraged when projects take ages to plan or don’t quite work out as planned. Keep trying.
Be a Role Model
Volunteers should consider themselves role-models.
Appropriate dress.
Appropriate topics of conversation
Take Care of Yourself
Watch out for depression. Living in a foreign country is difficult and working with high risk children is also emotionally draining.
Find a support group.
Become involved in other activities.
Communicate with other volunteers.
Keep your own health and personal safety in mind.
Have the appropriate vaccinations/prophylaxis. Understand that this population is at high risk for HIV, Hepatitis, and TB.
Remember to Pack Your Sense of Adventure
Be aware of cultural differences.
