Job Description

DIRECTOR, MIT MUSEUM, MIT Museum, to administer all aspects of the MIT Museum and oversee a dedicated staff of sixteen and a $1.3 million operating budget. The MIT Museum is undergoing a transformation into a dynamic and significant cultural institution and an experienced entrepreneurial leader desirous of an innovative academic environment is sought to continue and extend this development process. Responsibilities will include continued implementation of the long-range strategic plan for the Museum with special emphasis in the near-term on educational programs and exhibitions relevant both to the MIT community and to general audiences, including schools in the metropolitan Boston area; financial management and fund-raising; oversight of the curatorial staff and the implementation of policies for the care and management of collections; and working closely with the Museum's Advisory Board and committees and serving as the primary liaison between the museum and the university administration. Will report to the Associate Provost for the Arts. REQUIREMENTS: a significant record of leadership and accomplishment in a museum, historical society, or similar cultural institution; and an advanced degree. Experience managing multiyear, multimillion dollar projects; fundraising and securing major gifts; and oversight of collections required. Exceptional management and communication skills and knowledge of the unique aspects of working within a university structure considered vital. Application material should include references.
