Job Description

EHS COORDINATOR, School of Science, to oversee day-to-day activities within the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, McGovern Institute for Brain Research, and Picower Center for Learning and Memory. Will monitor compliance with environmental, health, and safety laws (i.e., EPA, and OSHA) and regulations and MIT practices and ensure that departments are implementing their responsibilities under MIT's EHS management system. Responsibilities include supporting the department heads and laboratory directors; making sure that all activities in the department, lab, or center and in each individual lab, facility, or space meet EHS requirements; generally recognizing and understanding the use of potentially hazardous materials (e.g., chemicals, biologicals, lasers, radioactives) and how to conduct potentially hazardous activities in accordance with EHS requirements; actively seeking approaches, methods, and techniques to reduce or avoid the use of hazardous materials where appropriate and disseminating this information; and working closely with the MIT EHS Office lead contact and other designated EHS team members to assure that EHS requirements are satisfied. REQUIREMENTS: an undergraduate or graduate degree in biology or at least two and preferably four or more years of relevant experience with laboratory processes; and professional certification in environment, health, and/or safety field or at least one and preferably four or more years of relevant experience in environmental, health, and/or safety compliance. Must show a bias for action and self-motivation. Solid interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills required; as is ability to work both independently as well as on a team. 02-0869P
