Job Description

ASSISTANT FOR GOVERNMENT AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS, Office of the President, to support MIT's government and community relations activities, working with a wide range of MIT departments and officers. Duties include supervising and assisting with the preparation of complex background material to support the federal interaction of MIT's senior officers and faculty, preparing correspondence and large mailings for the President, and maintaining the federal mailing list database in conjunction with the Washington Office. Will respond to a broad range of external requests for information and resources within the MIT/Cambridge community, identify MIT contacts to assist with specific issues and requests, serve on local boards and committees, and participate in community events and meetings. Will also respond to internal questions regarding local government and community relations matters, coordinate with MIT's Public Service Center on community outreach activities, supervise and assist with events related to MIT's Community Service Fund, and oversee all financial transactions. REQUIREMENTS: a bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience (master's degree preferred), three to five years' related experience, excellent organizational and administrative skills, and ability to problem solve and quickly respond to shifting priorities. Excellent writing and communication skills, initiative, and reliability essential. Must be able to discretely handle sensitive and confidential matters and work both independently and with others. Experience working on a variety of complex public policy challenges necessary, as is interest in a service-oriented position. Excellent computer skills needed; Macintosh experience preferred. Knowledge of Word, Excel, FileMaker Pro, electronic mail, and Netscape desirable. 02-1019N
