Job Description

ASSOCIATE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY COUNSEL, Office of the Intellectual Property Counsel, to act as a hands-on, campus-wide, legal advisor on matters relating to intellectual property, computer software, and the Internet. Will provide day-to-day services that include legal review, drafting and negotiation of a variety of legal agreements including nondisclosure, equipment loans, computer hardware/software procurement, telecommunications procurement agreements, and educational material development agreements. Will also provide advice to faculty and administrators on matters where knowledge of the law is important, especially in the area of intellectual property; work with the Technology Licensing Office and the Office of Sponsored Programs where appropriate; act in the place of the senior counsel when necessary; and share supervision of an assistant intellectual property counsel, a paralegal, and an administrative assistant. Primary direction will be received from the Senior Counsel for Intellectual Property or from the VP for Research. Other projects may come from the directors of Information Systems, the Technology Licensing Office, and/or the Office of Sponsored Programs. REQUIREMENTS: a law degree, five years' experience in intellectual property law including both patents and copyrights, and familiarity with university technology transfer issues. Membership in the Mass Bar Association preferred. Working knowledge of computer law and computer technology transfer from a university or industry perspective helpful. Familiarity with university educational materials development and government contracting highly desirable. Excellent negotiation, contracting drafting, oral and written communication, and organization skills necessary. Must be computer literate at a moderate skill level. 02-1098R
