Job Description

POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Aeronautics and Astronautic, to investigate the neurovestibular aspects of artificial gravity (AG) created by short-radius centrifugation as part of the Man Vehicle Laboratory. The position, under the direction of Prof. Laurence Young, is funded by NASA/National Space Biomedical Research Institute. The research is interdisciplinary and combines psychophysics, control theory, and applied physiology. Will investigate the theoretical and practical issues involved in generating AG with short-radius centrifugation. At the required rotation speeds, AG will create disruptive sensory effects as soon as the astronaut starts to move. Tilt illusions, inappropriate reflexive eye movements, and motion sickness result. Our research is aimed at understanding the mechanisms underlying this unique sensory conflict and the human adaptation to it, including sensory-motor coordination, the vestibulo-ocular reflex, and space travel. Will also be encouraged to pursue related independent research plans. Will be involved in project management and interact extensively with faculty, students, and allied research teams. More information can be found on the following web sites: http://mvl.mit.edu/, http://mvl.mit.edu/AG/, and http://web.mit.edu/aeroastro/www/people/lry/bio.html. REQUIREMENTS: a Ph.D. and a strong background in engineering (aeronautics/astronautics, mechanical, electrical, computer science, or human factors) or cognitive psychology (psychophysics, sensory physiology, vestibular system). 02-1118

Cambridge
