Job Description

RESEARCH ENGINEER, Haystack Observatory, to participate in the development of instrumentation for ionospheric radar and radio science systems as part of the Atmospheric Sciences Group. The group operates the Millstone Hill Incoherent Scatter Radar system. This is a large and powerful radar used for studying the near space environment. Current engineering efforts primarily focus on the modernization of the Millstone Hill Radar using advanced software radar technology. Other areas of strong interest include the development of next generation ionospheric radar systems and distributed radio science arrays. Additional general information is available at . REQUIREMENTS: an M.S. or Ph.D in electrical engineering, physics, computer engineering, or related field; experience designing, testing, and debugging electronics for radar or radio systems; and solid knowledge of RF analog electronics. Experience with digital electronics will include sensor interfacing, FPGA programming, embedded hardware design, and system integration. Working knowledge of printed circuit board design and layout necessary. Good communications and documentation skills required. Those familiar with digital receiver systems, antenna design, phased array antennas, high speed analog to digital converters, radar signal processing, software radio, and high power UHF transmitters, or those with radio science instrumentation field experience will receive special consideration. Some skill in software development in an open source Linux environment ideal. Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance. U.S. citizenship required. 02-1195
