Job Description

RESEARCH ENGINEER, Institute for Soldier Nanotechnology, to support experimental research projects related to discovery, characterization, testing, and proof of concept demonstration of materials and devices for protection of soldiers from diverse threats. Responsibilities include construction, maintenance, and operation of apparatus that exposes nano-, meso-, and macroscale materials to various testing environments, e.g., wide ranging strain rates under conditions sufficiently well controlled to allow quantitative interpretation of observations in terms of mechanistic and engineering models and correlations suitable for product/process design and scaleup. REQUIREMENTS: an earned doctorate (Ph.D., Sc.D.) in experimental research in materials science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or other discipline related to mechanical design and testing. Seek a hands-on, laboratory-oriented team player who is comfortable working one-on-one or in a group with a diverse range of people. Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills in English and the ability to work on several demanding research projects. Must know or be willing to learn the operation of different experimental equipment for mechanical testing and characterization of the chemical composition and physical structure at the nanoscale. Equipment of particular interest includes gas guns and split Hopkinson bars for ballistic testing and FTIR, SEM, STEM, and FIB. Excellent skills required in all aspects of experimental diagnostics including specification, operation, and maintenance of equipment for on-line, real-time optical, and electrical measurements.
