Job Description

RESEARCH ENGINEER, Institute for Soldier Nanotechnology, to support multiple experimental research projects related to discovery, characterization, testing, and proof of concept demonstration of materials and devices for protection of soldiers from diverse threats. Responsibilities include construction, maintenance, and operation of apparatus for the synthesis, characterization, testing, and processing of nanoscale materials and devices, as well as nano-, meso-, and macroscale platforms that incorporate these nanotechnologies to impart revolutionary protection and survivability capabilities in a lightweight battle suit. REQUIREMENTS: earned doctorate (Ph.D., Sc.D.) in experimental research in materials science, chemical engineering, chemistry, or other discipline related to chemical and biological studies on materials and materials processing. Seek collegial, hands-on, laboratory-oriented team player who is comfortable working one-on-one or in a group with a diverse range of researchers. Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills in English and ability to work simultaneously and productively on several demanding research projects. Must know or be willing to learn the operation of different experimental equipment for synthesis and processing of nanomaterials and nanodevices, as well as techniques for chemical and physical structure determinations on soft and hard materials, including FTIR, SEM, STEM, FIB, etc. Excellent skills required in all aspects of experimental diagnostics including specification, operation, and maintenance of equipment for real-time, on-line optical, and electrical measurements on specimens undergoing mechanical, thermal, and chemical stresses. Excellence in interfacing data acquisition hardware and software to diverse experimental systems essential, as are good data interpretation skills. 03-0006
