Notes: - A "full" or "complete" cycle is 8 measures long. This will feel longer than a cycle for some of the parts, but it's the time it takes for the harmonic cycle to complete. - This document should be used as the actual outline of the piece. The score contains the parts, but doesn't read linearly like a standard musical score. - All caps denotes the section. Details about the section are written in normal capitalization/lower case. - Obviously, feel free to improvise lots. INTRO: Entrance order: Sop 1 Bari Bass Tenor 1 & 2 on chords for 2 measures Tenors switch to broken chords as sop 2 and hosho enter at the same time Once hosho enters, everyone plays for one *complete* cycle (8 measures). VERSE: Should sound sparser. No hosho. Hosho re-enters on the last measure of transition, along with the optional sop 2 transition accomp. LAYERING 1: (8 measures, one cycle) Hosho back in! Loud section. Everyone plays for a full cycle (8 measures), then pauses. *** PAUSE, 1 MEASURE (4 beats) *** Lead probably should cue the end of this pause. Maybe use the same hand motion used to start club juggling. VERSE (same as before) LAYERING 2: (16 measures, two cycles) Hosho back in. There are some new parts -- see score for details. This layering section goes for 16 measures (two *full* cycles). PRECHORUS: (8 measures, one cycle) Hosho in. CHORUS: Hosho still in. This part goes on for as long as wanted. The way it's currently written, this section might be too many 8th notes. Feel free to mix up the rhythm if it's too much... Make sure soprano 1/tenor 2 line is heard. TRANSITION: (8 measures) This section should be quieter. If this isn't accomplished by the sudden lack of power chords, maybe take out the hosho again? *** OPTIONAL SECTION *** You could do the 1 measure pause followed by verse and then into layering here. This isn't in the original song, but it could be a good time to make the marimba rendition a bit longer and reuse some old material. And, of course, give everyone another chance to forget to pause for a measure. Another option is just to have a verse here, without the pause. I bet the pause would sound cool, though. LAYERING: Choose from layering 1 or layering 2, like before. The song uses layering 1, but at this point in the piece we're already taking plenty of liberties with structure, so layering 2 might sound good. *** NOTICE *** Following layering in the original piece, there's a bridge, and then a quiet section, and then the chorus again. I think that might be too much to memorize. Might as well just go into the prechorus and chorus again, reusing old material. However, if you guys are dying for even more stuff to memorize in this song, let me know and I'll write up the bridge/quiet section parts for everyone. I suppose, if you wanted to go all super epic on this piece, you could do the following at this point (i.e. do my idea, and then do what the song actually does, thus having your pie and eating it too): - pause for 1 measure - verse - layering 2 - prechorus - chorus - transition - layering - bridge - quiet section - chorus - transition (ending) ...but really, that might just be excessive. Your call. PRECHORUS: (8 measures) Same as before. CHORUS: Same as before. Lead, go wild. Or end it if it's getting to long. TRANSITION: (16 measures this time?) Even though this is the same as the "transition" part before, it's now the ending of the piece. Should maybe go on for 16 measures (2 full cycles) instead of 8 this time. Hosho should definitely stay in for this. The lead should perhaps make up a line to go along with this? Or we could be innovative and have some sort of weird marimba piece where the lead doesn't end things. Important note about the bass: for the last 4 measures of this section (half cycle), stay on the F-centered line instead of switching to the G-centered line. This will give a sustained feeling that will help end the piece.
