Tonegawa: Profile of the Author

1939年に愛知県で生まれる。京都大学理学部卒業。1968年にカリフォルニア大学 サンディエゴ校で分子生物学博士号を取得。バーゼル免疫研究所主任研究員を経 て、マサチューセッツ工科大学ガン研究所生物学教授に就任。「多様な抗体遺伝 子が体内で再構成される理論」を実証し、遺伝学、免疫学に貢献したことで、 1987年にノーベル医学、生理学賞を受賞。



Born in Aichi Prefecture in 1939. Graduated from the Dept. of Chemistry at University of Kyoto. Received PhD in molecular biology from UCSD in 1968. Worked at Basel Institute of Immunology in Basel, Switzerland. Became a professor of biology at the Center for Cancer Research at MIT since 1981. Won Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1987 for his contribution to genetics and immunology by showing how pieces of genes form millions of combinations which can produce a vast number of antibodies.
