When the boat turns, the sail, attached to the aluminum boom, crosses over the boat. Sailors have to duck under the swinging boom. It's all too easy to miss the timing and take a boom to the forehead, especially in high winds when the boom crosses quickly.

Jiji Gu, a freshman on the varsity team, checks a wound on her forehead. She insists that she's okay, but concern from coach Mike Kalin prompts her to head to MIT Medical to have it looked at.
