John Pratt, the boat rigger, keeps the boats in good condition. Even in the winter when the river is frozen and the pavilion closed, boats are being repaired. Wear and tear takes its toll on the hulls; bumping into the dock and crashes into other boats exacerbates leakage. The seams fail, causing leakage into the boats' flotation tanks.
