Sometimes the wind gets strong enough to blow small waves onto the surface of
the river. The boats crash through the waves, sending spray into the air. Today
the wind is holding steady at about 15 knots from the northwest, gusting to as
much as 30 knots.

swimming.” He's not too far from the truth; the wind proves challenging
for even the most experienced sailors, and many members of the team capsize.
