UNIVERSITY NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Lovingly Renovated Widener Prepares for 21st Century Scholars
For the past five years, Widener Memorial Library - one of Harvard's best-known buildings and the heart of its 90-library system - has surrendered its scholarly serenity to the cacophony of construction. Yet from the start of Widener's two-phase renovation in 1999 to its finish this past July, the library remained open for business. Perhaps even more stunning, the $90 million-plus project concluded on time and on budget.

Financial Times Feature: University Challenge
Just after turning 18, I applied to study at Oxford University. I sat the entrance exam alone in my school's career library and then went up for the interview at Lincoln College, Oxford. A few weeks later, on a frosty morning just before Christmas, the rejection arrived. Holding that letter, I sat and wept.

Former Radcliffe Institute Fellow Gish Jen talks about "The Love Wife"
When Alfred A. Knopf sent out advance copies of Gish Jen's new novel last March, a rare letter from Jen's editor, Ann Close, was bound into the front of the books, saying, "The last time I wrote a letter of this kind was some years ago for Alice Munro's Friend of My Youth - a book that seemed to me to signal a new phase of her career. The Love Wife makes me feel that Gish Jen is at just about the same point."
