Kailas's Page
biking

I started mountain biking at the end of the summer of 2001. It's a great sport that is a good blend of outdoors and excitement. I'm just begining and working on my riding skills.

My goal with this page is to serve as a mountain biking resource for the New England area. Katie and I go riding around Boston and southern New Hampshire. We've found that it's difficult to get good information on rides and stuff, and the exact location of everything. I decided it'd be useful to have an online description of trails, with a map, and some GPS coordinates.

This page will grow as I have time to update the list of rides. If you have information and are interested in helping out, please email me (you can search for my email address through the people directory at web.mit.edu).

Wompatuck State Park This park provides a nice ride, not too far from boston. The trails are pretty easy, with a few, somewhat technical portions. This park provides the ability to do alot of riding w/out having to get off and engage in hiking. The park is covered with fire roads, so you really can't get lost and the trails are reasonably well marked. The map can be found through the link on the state parks site. Great place to go for a first ride.

Myles Standish State Park This park is huge. It's about a 40 mile drive from boston. the biggest downside is the lack of mountain biking trails. There is a nice, paved, path if you like that type of thing. We went looking for trail riding and just found alot of overgrown trails. We started on a horse path that was really sandy, then ended up riding through completely overgrown hiking paths that left us with nice cuts and scratches from branches. We had to get down and walk when the bushes got too thick. It's probably a great place for a day hike around, or a road bike ride on the paved path, but don't go here for trail riding.

MTB Trail Reviews This site is excellent. It gives you lots of feedback on trails from around the country. The directions to trail heads are a bit lacking and some of the reviews aren't too helpful, but it's very useful overall.
