We drove up to Bar Harbor, Maine, (with a stop in
Portland) where we planned to take
the Cat Ferry to Nova
Scotia, but found the next morning that the ferry wasn't running due to weather. This
led to us driving for a quite long time through New Brunswick to Halifax.
Halifax has a fort on the hill called the Citadel,
with bagpipers, good food, and an
irish pub Sj approved of.
From Halifax, we went up to the Cape Breton
Highlands National Park. It was beautiful
and empty. There were still tiny patches of snow in the shade, but the ocean and
hiking were fun.
Next we took the ferry to Prince Edward Island. PEI had amazing red soil, which
contrasted well with the blue ocean and green fields. The island has an obsession with
Anne of Green Gables (which was set there) and a surprising number of Japanese tourists
who come because of the book.
Driving south from PEI, we crossed the 12 km bridge to the mainland, then drove down
through New Brunswick. Just before crossing the border, we stopped for a few hours at
King's Landing, a recreationist village set in various parts of the 19th century. The
most impressive part was a working sawmill made almost entirely of wood, including
giant wooden gears.
