Award Recipients 2007-08
The Committee for the I. Austin Kelly Essay III Prizes -- consisting of Professors Patricia Tang (Music), Arthur Bahr (Literature), and William Broadhead (History) -- is pleased to announce the results of this year's competition.
Two first prizes ($800 each) have been awarded to:
- Jamie Edwards, '08 for her essay entitled: "The Military Commissions Act of 2006," and
- Dugan Hayes, '08 for his essay entitled: "A Paradise Within: Internalization of Heaven and Hell in Paradise Lost."
In addition, the Committee decided to bestow an Honorable Mention ($400) on:
- Erin Fitzgerald,'09 for her essay entitled: "Paralysis, Gnomon, Simony: The Inheritance of the Bereft."
Kelly-Douglas 2008 Undergraduate Travelling Fellows
The Kelly-Douglas Board is pleased to announce its decisions on Kelly Travelling Fellowships for 2008. The Kelly Fund received a large number of worthy applications for its IAP and Summer fellowship funds. Unfortunately, it was not possible to support them all. The awards distributed ranged across a variety of activities, including humanitarian and artistic projects, academic research, and language learning.
The recipients of this year's Summer Travel Awards are:
- Katherine Chu (Course 9, '09): for travel to Iceland to recreate a Marta Pan sculpture.
- Sarah Cooper-Davis (Course 2A, ,09): to work in Vietnam developing affordable tricycle attachments for disabled people.
- Xin He (Course 7, '09): to work on tuberculosis prevention and treatment campaign in Bolivia.
- Danbee Kim (Course 9, '09): Videoblogging the cultural and political landscape of the US.
- Samuel E. Kronick (Course 4, '10): to Denmark to make a documentary video about the N55 artist community.
- Long Lam (Course 2, '10) and Mahalia Miller (2, '09): to Germany for language study.
- Matthew Lord (Course 18 and 21L, '09): to attend the Transatlantic Whitman Association International Conference in Germany.
- Roxana Safipour (Course 12, '09): teaching English at a rural high school in Bolivia.
- Justin Tan (Course 20, '09) and Austin Tzou (20, '10): to Malaysia to develop Wii-based rehabilitation programmes for stroke victims.
- Stephanie Wu (Course 7, '10): travel to Shanghai to develop music therapy programmes for patients suffering from Alzheimer's.
The winners of this year's IAP Travelling Awards are:
- Isabel Y. Chang (Course 9, '10) and Yala Wu (3, '09): to Germany for intensive language study.
- Praveen Rathinavelu (Course 18 and 21L, '10), John Vincent (2, '09), and Analiese di Conti (7, '10): to Spain for intensive language study.
- Natalie Rodriguez (Course 21F and 7, '09): to France for intensive language study.
- Jessica Schirmer (Course 8, '08): to document patient care aspects of treatment for the disabled in India.
- Michael Hurley (Course 17, '10): work on access to Strep-A testing in Tanzania.
- Mani Sriniwasan (Course 9, '10): to learn Senegalese drumming in Senegal.
- Edwin Chen (Course 18, '09): language study and linguistic field work in Iceland.
- Xin He (Course 7, '09): to travel to Rome as part of the IAP History programme.
